What is the China Price/Mix Tracker

The China Price and Mix Tracker gives visibility into the strongest and weakest parts of the Chinese market by combining transaction prices, MSRP data, incentives, discounting patterns and volume.

It shows both how the market is behaving and how competitive the pricing environment is at every price point.

Use cases for the app:

  • Analyse average transaction prices, discounts and incentives at company, brand and model level.

  • Track how pricing is evolving over time by segment, propulsion type or price band.

  • Identify aggressive discounting behaviour early, including unusual incentive activity.

  • See whether a company is defending pricing or cutting heavily to maintain volumes.

  • Understand the true competitive landscape for each price tier and propulsion type.

Why it matters

China’s pricing environment is volatile and highly competitive. Small changes in discounting can significantly impact margins, volumes and market share.

This app allows teams across Strategy, FP&A and IR to quickly identify where the pressure points are and whether a competitor’s volume gains are healthy or discount driven.

Metric definitions

Volumes - Absolute (insurance)

Total number of vehicles registered / insured in the selected scope and period, based on insurance / registration datasets.

Transaction Price

Average actual transaction price paid by the end customer per vehicle in the selected scope (after incentives and discounts)

MSRP (CNY)

Average manufacturer's suggested retail price for vehicles in the selected scope (unweighted or weighted by volumes depending on the data source)

Average Incentive

Average per‑unit value of OEM incentives on the vehicle (for example rebates, cash incentives) expressed as a currency amount.

Column definitions

Company

Corporate group responsible for the vehicle (for example Volkswagen Group, General Motos, SAIC).

Brand

Vehicle brand name as marketed to customers (for example Volkswagen, Buick, BYD)

Model

Vehicle model or nameplate (for example Model 3, F‑150, Corolla).

Global / Local

Splits between vehicles from local manufacturers and global manufacturers. For China Apps local would be Chinese HQ manufacturers (BYD, Geely, Xpeng etc) and Global would be ex China manufacturers (Volkswagen, BMW)

Company Region

Geographical region associated with the OEM group headquarters or primary business region. Used for grouping rather than vehicle assembly location. For example Europe would include Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes etc

Ownership (Cons./JV)

Indicates whether the brand or model is produced under a wholly owned entity or a joint venture. Common in China where foreign OEMs partner with local manufacturers

Propulsion

Propulsion type of the vehicle (for example Internal combustion engine (ICE), BEV, PHEV, HEV, EREV

Propulsion (+xHEV SPLIT)

Propulsion type classification that includes extended hybrid categories such as HEV, MHEV, PHEV, EREV, alongside ICE and BEV

Model trim

Specific variant of a model (for example Standard, Long Range, Performance, Luxury). Allows users to compare pricing, incentives and positioning across trims within the same model family

Numerical Column definitions

MSRP (CNY)

The vehicle’s official list price in China, expressed in CNY. This is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price before any discounts or incentives

Transaction Price (CNY)

The actual price consumers paid for the vehicle in China, expressed in CNY. This reflects real market pricing after discounts and incentives

Numerical filter definitions

MSRP (CNY) bucket

Customisable ranges grouping vehicles by their manufacturer suggested retail price to compare pricing tiers across the market

Transaction Price (CNY) bucket

Price range buckets based on actual transaction prices after incentives. Used to analyse shifts in real market pricing relative to MSRP

MSRP (CNY) filter

Direct numerical filter allowing users to specify upper or lower bounds for MSRP values

Transaction Price (CNY) filter

Direct filter enabling selection of vehicles by actual transaction price thresholds

Vendor Filters definitions

Company-Brand-Model-Trim

Filter allowing users to select at the company, brand, model, or trim level to narrow results to the exact vehicle variants of interest. Useful for isolating comparisons between specific model families and trims

Global/Local

Filter separating Chinese domestic manufacturers from global (international) OEMs to compare performance of local vs foreign brands in China

Company Region

Filter limiting results to companies headquartered in selected world regions such as Europe, North America, or China

Ownership (Cons.JV)

Filter that restricts results by ownership structure, enabling isolation of jointly produced models versus wholly owned OEM output

Propulsion (+xHEV SPLIT)

Propulsion type classification that includes extended hybrid categories such as HEV, MHEV, PHEV, EREV, alongside ICE and BEV

Model trim

Filter that lets users restrict results to specific trims or variants within a model range, so they can compare pricing and incentives at the sub-model level (for example Standard vs Long Range vs Performance)
